Digital Concert: Peter and the Wolf

Enjoy a new twist on a classic orchestral tale. A virtual adventure to the Endangered Wolf Center in Eureka, Missouri, adds meaning to Sergei Prokofiev’s beloved orchestral story. Explore his compositional choices with your students and get them thinking about their own. Maybe that wolf isn’t such a menace after all!

Learning Objectives

Students will…

  • Experience an orchestra performance.
  • Discern between instrumental timbres.
  • Explore compositional choices.
  • Learn about wolf and canid species.

Prepare students for the concert and extend learning afterwards with lesson plans and activity ideas.

Before viewing the concert, read the story of Peter and the Wolf with your students. Discuss how different characters felt and invite students to retell the story through acting, movement, or illustration.

The Story of Peter and the Wolf

Before viewing the concert, familiarize students with the musical characters in the orchestral story. Students will find clues from the story and the music to make meaningful inferences about Prokofiev’s instrument choices in Peter and the Wolf.

Musical Characters

After enjoying the concert, research the wolf and canid species that live at the Endangered Wolf Center. Lead your students through an activity where they compose and perform a musical theme that represents their favorite wolf or canid species.
