About this Concert
Imagine strolling through an astounding art gallery without ever leaving your seat. Both Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition take us into the world of visual art, gathering ideas from famous paintings and using melody and timbre as tour guides. Between these works, the extraordinary prodigy Himari steps onto the stage for her remarkable SLSO debut. She performs Glazunov’s lyrical Violin Concerto, music charged with beautiful tension.
-
- When Modest Mussorgsky walked through the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, Russia, a flood of emotions filled his spirit. The art on display was that of his close friend who had suddenly passed away at the age of 39. This experience was the spark for Pictures at an Exhibition.
- Born in 2011, Himari has earned the honor of being the youngest accepted applicant at the Curtis Institute of Music and the youngest female artist to sign with the Decca recording label.
- John Storgårds’ journey to the conductor’s podium included a rise through the violin section of several orchestras, a position as the concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony, and leadership roles in several chamber music ensembles.
