About this Concert

Indomitable, legendary women make their mark in this concert celebrating operatic scores and captivating storytelling. Anja Bihlmaier conducts this orchestral thriller, featuring music from Strauss’ epic, revengeful opera, Elektra. The twisted tale of Salomé is depicted by French composer Mel Bonis, whose music explores the stories of distinctive female figures from literature and mythology. At the center of the program, Yeol Eum Son’s virtuosic gifts shine in Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto.

- Mel Bonis, born Mélanie Hélène Bonis, grew up in a family and culture that discouraged women from pursuing musical careers and discriminated against the publication of music written by them. She persistently fought against this system of limitations to complete more than 300 compositions, many inspired by other remarkable women.
- Following a recent performance of the Elektra Symphonic Suite, a reviewer raved about Anja Bihlmaier’s leadership of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, saying that she “controlled the music’s slow burning fuse extremely impressively.” (Seen and Heard International)
- The video recording of Yeol Eum Son’s performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 at the International Tchaikovsky Competition has received more than 28 million views on YouTube.
