Digital Tiny Tunes: The Lion and the Mouse

Two unlikely friends—the mighty lion and the little mouse—take us on an adventure that proves even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference. Familiar tunes from Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt bring the story of The Lion and the Mouse to life as students dance and play instruments along with SLSO musicians.

Learning Objectives

Students will…

  • Enjoy the experience of participating in a musical performance.
  • Perform a rhythmic pattern along with the SLSO.
  • Discern between high and low pitches in music by varying expressive movement.
  • Experience how music can express different emotions and make a story come to life.

Prepare students for the concert and extend learning afterwards with lesson plans and activity ideas. Familiarize students with the story of The Lion and the Mouse, compose and perform rhythmic patterns on found or made percussion instruments, practice listening for the difference between high and low sounds, and have fun moving creatively with scarves. Lesson plans align with Missouri Early Learning Standards and Missouri Music Standards.

Teacher Guide

Use pictures and simple words as musical notation. For use with Lesson 3 in the Teacher Guide, these rhythm cards allow students to easily compose a rhythmic pattern and prepare to perform along with the SLSO.

Post-Concert Survey

After watching this program with your students, please take five minutes to complete the Teacher Survey. The SLSO needs your feedback to share with funders the impact these programs have in classrooms. And the SLSO relies on your input as we create new programs that meet teachers’ needs. Insight from teachers like you is our most valuable resource.

This survey should take less than five minutes to complete. You are encouraged to complete this survey for each digital program you use in your classroom.
