Holocaust Composer Stories

This series of stories will connect us to composers who were affected by the Holocaust. Each story will include a video of a musical performance wrapped with historical context and strategies for active listening. Guided by a historian and a musicologist, we will encounter musical compositions as first-person narratives that provide glimpses into the lived experiences and emotions of individuals impacted by the Holocaust. Four stories will be released between 2025 and 2031.

When we connect with a person through their art, we come to recognize the artist’s humanity and, in doing so, actively resist those who tried to silence them.

Pavel Haas

Coming in 2025

Czech composer Pavel Haas was among the millions of people whose lives were deeply impacted by the Holocaust. Haas’ String Quartet No. 3 is a record of his experience as a Jewish person living in Czechoslovakia as the Holocaust was unfolding across Europe. In this video, we’ll learn about Haas’ life, explore the history he experienced, and listen closely to his String Quartet No. 3. By engaging with Pavel Haas’ story and music, we gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust.

Included teacher resources will offer pathways for incorporating Holocaust Composer Stories: Pavel Haas into middle and high school history, social studies, and music curricula.
