Our Touring History

For decades, the SLSO has prioritized sharing the power of music in communities large and small. Local and regional tours date back to the early years of the orchestra.

The orchestra first performed in Carnegie Hall in 1950. Regular performances at that venue have charmed critics and audiences alike ever since. Tours to communities large and small on the east and west coasts, along with the Midwest and south have solidified its national reputation. The orchestra is a regular collaborator with American universities, having developed strong relationship with higher education institutions throughout the Midwest including the University of Missouri, Indiana University, the University of Illinois, the University of Nebraska, Southeast Missouri State University, and others.

International tours began in 1978 with three concerts as a resident orchestra at the Athens Festival. In the more than 40 years since that first tour, the SLSO has given concerts in a dozen countries in Europe and Asia—most recently completing a four-country European tour in 2023 with Music Director Stéphane Denève and pianist Víkingur Ólafsson.
