Meet the Musicians: Emily Ho, First Violin

Emily Ho

How did you get started playing your instrument?

My parents told me that I saw my cousin playing and wanted to try too. My first “violin” was an empty egg carton.

What do you love most about your instrument?

It’s more of a love-hate relationship. I love the music I get to play, yet I love to hate how challenging the violin is and how endless a pursuit it is.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

Be open to living anywhere. That removed any limitations of what I thought was possible for my career.

If you weren’t a musician, what career would you pursue?

I would be a veterinarian.

How do you manage pre-show nerves?

Yoga.

Do you have any pre-concert routines, rituals, or superstitions?

Eat something bland.

What do you love about the SLSO?

Being able to play with and listen to amazing musicians.

What has been your most memorable performance since joining  the SLSO?

Jerzy Semkow conducting Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in 2006, and Jun Märkl conducting Ravel’s La Valse in 2011.
