Follow Along with the Powell Hall Expansion and Renovation
September 23, 2024
With the structural steel erected and spray fireproofing applied, construction crews at the Jack C. Taylor Music Center—home of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra—have begun enclosing the new lobby, a focal point of the 64,000-square-foot expansion project. Recently, crews began installing sheathing—exterior panels that cover the structural steel and starts to layer the building’s exterior walls. The lobby is expected to be fully enclosed in early 2025.
Once the sheathing installation is complete, crews will install an air barrier on the exterior before masonry work begins. The gentle curves of the new lobby complement the existing 1925 building, Powell Hall. Designed by lead architect Snøhetta and architect of record Christner Architects, the lobby’s shape was inspired by the fluidity of St. Louis’ river ecosystems and the graceful curves of string instruments. The lobby will include many improved and new guest amenities, including a Box Office, concession area, restrooms, a coat check, and a grand spiral staircase.
