About this Concert
Hailed as a rising star of the piano world, Janice Carissa makes her Powell Hall recital debut with a bold program shaped by her distinctive musical voice. Acclaimed for her vivid storytelling and colorful interpretations, Carissa brings clarity, imagination, and expressive depth to music spanning three centuries—from Bach’s elegant French Suite No. 5 to the swirling grandeur of Ravel’s La valse, with stops in the evocative worlds of Enrique Granados, Olivier Messiaen, and more.
-
- Since making her Philadelphia Orchestra debut at age 16, Janice Carissa has performed on a variety of stages around the world, including the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and more. She has performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Pittsburgh, San Diego, Nashville, Kansas City, and Jakarta symphonies, among others.
- A Gilmore Young Artist and winner of Salon de Virtuosi, Janice Carissa has been praised for having “the multicolored highlights of a mature pianist” (Philadelphia Inquirer) and “strong, sure hands” (Voice of America) that “convey a vivid story rather than a mere showpiece” (Chicago Classical Review).
- During her debut with the San Diego Symphony and conductor Paolo Bortolameolli, Carissa was hailed for her “masterful” playing of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, having the ability to summon “ferocious sonorities in the bass register, flying to the top register and back with graceful agility” (San Diego Union-Tribune).
