- Although “Edelweiss” sounds like a traditional Austrian folk song, it was written specifically for the musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. It turned out to be the last song they ever composed together.
- The title song was almost cut from the film, as producers feared it slowed down the start of the action. Luckily, it stayed—and Julie Andrews’ sweeping performance in the mountains became one of the most iconic scenes in movie history.
- To portray her character authentically, Julie Andrews took guitar lessons, despite some frustrations with the instrument. The scene with Maria singing “Do-Re-Mi,” among others, features her playing.
