About this Concert
Two masterpieces, one stage. Igor Stravinsky’s electrifying Petrushka and Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize–winning album DAMN. collide in a fearless orchestral journey with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. This daring blend of ballet and hip–hop combines two works linked by their “show-within-a-show” structure and their protagonists’ struggle with identity, reality, and power. As Stravinsky’s puppets awaken to human emotion, Lamar’s brilliant, cinematic songs— “DNA.”, “HUMBLE.”, “LOVE.,” “XXX,” “FEAR.”, and more—unfold in sequence alongside the ballet’s vivid score.
-
- This marks the SLSO’s fifth collaboration with composer-conductor Steve Hackman. Previous performances include Brahms X Radiohead (2024), Beethoven X Beyoncé (2025), Beethoven X Coldplay (2026), and Taylor Swift: The Symphony Era earlier this season.
- Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka premiered in 1911 in Paris and shocked audiences with its bold, modern sound—cementing Igor Stravinsky as one of the most innovative composers of the 20th century. Originally written for the legendary Ballets Russes, the ballet helped redefine what dance music could sound like.
- Kendrick Lamar’s 2017 album DAMN. made history by winning the Pulitzer Prize for Music, a first for any hip-hop release. The album is known for its raw honesty, innovative production, and powerful exploration of identity, faith, and society.
