Live at The Sheldon: String Theory

By Eric Dundon

St. Louis Symphony Orchestra musicians shared the spotlight for the continuation of its partnership with The Sheldon in Live at The Sheldon, a chamber music series curated and performed by SLSO musicians. For the inaugural concert of the second season of the series, it was the strings section that was featured, led by Associated Concertmaster Erin Schreiber and violinist Shawn Weil, who curated the program.

Joining the violinists was violist Shannon Williams, cellist Bjorn Ranheim, and pianist Peter Henderson. The full house enjoyed a varied program, selected intentionally by Schreiber and Weil to showcase the many effects and styles achievable by stringed instruments. Opening with Caroline Shaw’s ghostly Entr’acte, the program included music by George Walker, Pablo de Sarasate, and Stefan Freund—a longtime friend of Schreiber and Weil’s. The program culminated with Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet, one of the first piano quintets to enter the repertoire.
