Play Ball! Adam Wainwright joins SLSO for a night of Americana

St. Louisans remember Adam Wainwright for his All-Star pitching career with the Cardinals. On February 22, 2025, he turned in his baseball glove for his guitar for a night of music with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The Double Play concert combined music from Wainwright’s debut album, Hey Y’all, alongside other favorites related to baseball.

The evening, led by conductor John Morris Russell, was divided into innings. Orchestra members donned Cardinals gear for performances of nostalgic pieces like Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag and the theme from Field of Dreams. Wainwright performed two sets with his band alongside the orchestra. And sports announcer Joe Buck joined to narrate a special rendition of Casey at the Bat.
