Luan Nguyen

Alternate
Sullivan High School

Luan Nguyen is a senior at Sullivan High School. He is looking forward to his first season with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra as an alternate.

He began playing clarinet and piano in sixth grade, where he developed his love for music throughout the years. He performs with his school’s wind ensemble and marching band, and he enjoys playing saxophone with the jazz band. For the past five years, Luan was part of the East Central All-District Band and achieved high ratings in MSHSAA state contests with the clarinet and piano. In 2021, he began studies with Kelly Austerman. After gaining more proficiency in clarinet, he was selected into the Missouri All-State Band in 2022 and the Missouri All-State Orchestra in 2023. Throughout his six years in music, his favorite memory to this day is performing with the high school band at the 2023 Missouri Music Educators Association Conference.

Outside of music, Luan loves to mindlessly look through social media and learn new facts about science and math. He also enjoys video games and adores spending time with friends in his free time, whether online or in person.

Luan would like to thank his music directors Chuck Moore, Joey Musterman, and Natalie Moore; his clarinet instructor Kelly Austermann; his piano teacher Kay Harrison; and his friends for supporting him and sharing the gift of music. He is especially very thankful to his mother for dealing with the sounds of his clarinet at home and helping him become the musician he is today.
