Brendan Kiefer

Brendan Kiefer, a junior at Eureka High School, is thrilled to join the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra for his first season. A trombonist for six years, Kiefer studies privately with Jason Bergman and discovered his love for bass trombone while performing with the Eureka High School Jazz Ensemble. At school, he is deeply involved in the music program, playing in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Symphony, Pit Orchestra, and leading the marching band as Drum Major.  

Outside of his musical pursuits, Kiefer can usually be found caring for his fish and dart frogs or volunteering with the St. Louis Zoo and World Bird Sanctuary. His passion for wildlife conservation, especially marine science, inspires much of his time outside the band room. He is always up for trying new adventurous foods, playing volleyball, or working as a Starbucks barista.  

Kiefer is grateful for the mentors and opportunities that have shaped him as a musician. He thanks Brad Smelser for leading the Eureka band program; Jeremy Knudson for encouraging him to play bass trombone and continually challenging him to grow; Jason Bergman for his invaluable private instruction and mentorship; Mary White for providing orchestral and pit opportunities and serving as a trusted guide; his parents for their guidance and unwavering support; and his remaining family and friends for supporting both his musical and conservation pursuits.
