Joy Shin

Joy Shin is a senior at Parkway West High School, and this is her fourth season with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Before the viola, Shin initially began on the piano at age 6. She started learning the viola at age 9 and is currently studying with Rebecca Pantano.  

Shin is a member of Parkway West High’s Symphonic Orchestra and has been selected for the 2024, 2025, and 2026 Missouri All-State Orchestras. Additionally, Shin has participated in chamber programs such as the Preparatory Program at Webster University’s Community Music School. There, she co-founded the Hermosa Quartet, which was a quarterfinalist in the 2026 Fischoff National Chamber Competition.  

During the summer, Shin has participated in various festivals such as Credo St. Louis and the Addicott Chamber Music Festival, where she worked closely with the Euclid, Calidore, and Dover Quartets. Outside of music, Shin loves to be active and runs for her school’s cross-country and track teams. She also enjoys journaling, reading, and going on walks. Shin would like to thank her family, Vera Parkin, and Rebecca Pantano for their amazing support and guidance.
