Charis Shing

Home Educated

Charis Shing, a 13-year-old violinist, began her musical journey at the age of 4. Since 2021, she has been under the tutelage of Ms. Joo Kim. Charis is thrilled to join the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra as a full-time musician this year.

Charis has enriched her skills and experience through various programs at the Community Music School of Webster University. She was a member of the first violin section in the Young People’s Symphonic Orchestra during the 2022-2023 season and participated in the Preparatory Program for the 2023-2024 season. Her leadership abilities are evident as she served as the co-principal of the Parkway West Middle School Orchestra and the concertmaster of the St. Louis Suburban Middle School Honor Orchestra for the 2023-2024 school year.

At the age of 10, Charis made a remarkable public solo debut with the Alton Symphony Orchestra, where she was the Deborah Fox Guild Award winner. Her accomplishments continued in 2023 when she performed with the CMS Young People’s Symphonic Orchestra after winning the YPSO Concerto Competition. In 2024, Charis had the honor of performing as a soloist with both the Town and Country Symphony Orchestra and the University City Symphony Orchestra.

Charis is deeply grateful for the guidance and mentorship she has received from Ms. Joo Kim over the years. She also extends her heartfelt appreciation to all those who have supported and guided her on her musical journey, especially Laura Holzen, Vera Parkin, Rebecca Pantano, Patrick Jackson, and Annette Burkhart.
