Andrew Su

Andrew Su, age 16, is a junior at Clayton High School. He started playing the cello when he was 9 under the guidance of his wonderful teacher James Czyzewksi. 

This is Su’s fifth season in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and his second season serving as co-principal of the cello section. He has also been a mentor in the Gateway Music Outreach’s Peer to Peer program for three years. Su was a member of the 2024 Missouri All-State Orchestra and principal cellist in the 2025 Missouri All-State Orchestra. He was also the cellist of the Hermosa String Quartet, which qualified for the quarterfinals of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in 2026. Su has won gold in the 2024 SLAMTA Young Artist Competition and first place in the 2025 Southern Illinois Young Artist Organization Competition Junior Division. 

Su has enriched his cello skills and orchestral experience through various programs at the Community Music School of Webster University (CMS) such as the Young People’s Symphonic Orchestra. He has also played chamber music in the CMS Preparatory program and the St. Louis Chamber Music Society.  

Outside of playing the cello, Su enjoys playing tennis and drawing. Su is deeply grateful for the guidance and mentorship he has received from his teacher James Czyzewski over the years. He also extends his heartfelt appreciation to his school orchestra director Daniel Henderson, Vera Parkin, Rebecca Pantano, Laura Holzen, his family, and all others who have supported and guided him on his musical journey.
