Gergo Szilagyi
Gergo Szilagyi is a 16-year-old cellist and is beginning his second season with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is a junior at Ladue Horton Watkins High School and has played cello since the age of 5. Szilagyi has participated in the Young People’s Concert and Symphonic Orchestras at the Community Music School of Webster and has also been a member of the Missouri All-State Orchestra for two years. He also has several years of chamber music experience, his most notable ensemble being the Amare String Quartet in which he advanced to the final round of the 2026 St. Paul String Quartet Competition.
Szilagyi studies under Kurt Baldwin, the cellist of the Arianna String Quartet and professor at the University of Missouri St. Louis. He would like to sincerely thank Prof. Baldwin, his parents, and his school orchestra director Sarah Heuermann for shaping his musical journey.
Szilagyi’s family has various artistic and musical roots; the men were generally cellists and women violinists. His cello is a family heirloom that his great-grandfather obtained in Berlin in 1921, and had been passed down through four generations of cellists. Outside of music, Szilagyi enjoys traveling abroad, such as visiting family in Romania, doing outdoor activities like hiking and cycling, playing sports such as tennis, ping pong, and billiards, and loves spending time with his friends and family along with their dog Samu.
