Roy Zhu

Roy Zhu is a junior at John Burroughs School and is grateful to play bass clarinet in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra for his first season. Zhu looks forward to collaborating with more experienced YO and SLSO players and wishes to learn as much as he can from his peers. He has been playing soprano clarinet for 6 years and bass clarinet for 2 years. 

Zhu has played with many ensembles, including as the principal clarinetist with the Webster University Community Music School’s Young People’s Concert Orchestra and bass clarinetist with the Young People’s Symphonic Orchestra, with which he performed at Carnegie Hall. He has also been a member of the Missouri All-State Band. 

Outside of music, Zhu enjoys weightlifting, developing recipes, conducting fermentation experiments in his kitchen, and posting cooking videos on Instagram. 

Zhu would like to thank his past clarinet teachers, his current teacher, Paul Varley, and his band director, Tim Baker, for their unwavering support and expertise. He would also like to thank his friends and family for their love and encouragement.
