Youth Orchestra

Jason Shi

Ladue Horton Watkins High School

Jason Shi, 16, is a junior at Ladue Horton Watkins High School. He has been playing the violin for five years, and this is his first season in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Before becoming a member of the SLSYO, Jason played in the Webster University Community Music School’s Young People’s Symphonic Orchestra for two years. Currently, he is tutoring two students in his school’s music tutoring program, Music Notes.

Jason first began playing the violin in sixth grade, when he joined his middle school’s orchestra. After moving to St. Louis in eighth grade, he knew that he wanted to join the group of incredibly talented musicians. Currently, he is a student of SLSO member Xiaoxiao Qiang, and is extremely grateful for her encouragement and tutelage in his violin journey. He is also thankful for his family and other musical instructors who have helped him with his studies, such as Professor Carla Trynchuk of Andrews University. Outside of the violin, Jason enjoys playing chess, playing tennis with his brother, and studying for, coaching, and competing in math competitions.
