Kevin Shi

Ladue Middle School

Kevin Shi is an eighth grader at Ladue Middle School. He started playing the violin at the age of seven, and this is his first season in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Before becoming a member of the SLSYO, Shi has served as the concertmaster for Webster University Community Music School’s Young People’s Concert Orchestra and has also played in their Symphonic Orchestra for one year.

Shi first studied under Professor Carla Trynchuk of Andrews University before moving to St. Louis in fourth grade. Afterwards, he became a student of SLSO member Xiao Xiao Qiang, whom he is currently studying under. In St. Louis, he was introduced to many extremely talented musicians, both in school and out of school. He earned a Silver medal at the 2025 SLAMTA Young Artist competition, and is one of his school’s co-concertmasters. Shi is always getting better with each minute practiced, and is grateful for his family and musical teachers who have helped him become a part of the YO. Outside of the violin, Shi enjoys playing tennis with his friends, camping with his Boy Scout troop, and competing in various math contests.
