Max Harbuck
Max Harbuck is 16 years old in his Junior year at Lindbergh High School. He began studying viola at the age of 9, through the Lindbergh Strings program. He has studied under Laura Reycraft since 6th grade. He enjoys viola for its mellow sound and unique characteristics.
Harbuck has found many unique experiences through his school’s orchestra program under the direction of Tara Landers. He has been a part of the Fiddlers club and has mentored younger students in summer strings camp. One of his more recent opportunities was a trip to Germany, where the Lindbergh Symphony performed with the Telemänner orchestra at the Liederhalle Stuttgart.
In his sophomore year, Harbuck had the opportunity to visit and perform at Carnegie Hall with the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra through Community Music School. In both 8th and 9th grade, he was selected to perform at the E. Desmond Lee festivals, and participated in the high school All-Suburban orchestra. He earned a gold medal in his sophomore year in regional Solo and Ensemble, and a silver medal at state.
For the past 3 summers, as part of the CMS composition camp, Harbuck has written several pieces that have been performed by professional musicians.
Aside from playing viola, Harbuck enjoys walking, reading, and listening to music. He enjoys sketching and drawing. He has an interest in native insects and enjoys spending time in nature.
Harbuck is extremely excited to be playing in the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, and can’t wait to take part this year. He would like to thank Laura Reycraft for her support and expertise in shaping his musical path, and Tara Landers for providing a rich musical community at LHS and his family and friends who offer support.
