Haowen Liu is a Sophomore at Clayton High School. This is his first season with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. He first began playing the violin at the age of 11, learning from Alexey Shabalin. He studied with Angie Smart for three years after moving to St. Louis. Haowen is currently studying with Hannah Ji.

In past years, Haowen has played in orchestras at the Community Music School of Webster University, in both the YPCO and YPSO. He has also played in the 2024 Missouri All-State Orchestra. Haowen is currently in his school’s Symphonic Orchestra and a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society. This past summer, he participated in the Arianna Chamber Music Festival.

Besides the violin, Haowen also enjoys sports such as tennis, running, and swimming. He loves traveling and going to National Parks around the country.

Haowen would like to thank all his teachers, Angie Smart, Hannah Ji, and Daniel Henderson for guiding his musical journey. He is extremely grateful for the unwavering support from his grandparents and parents throughout his years of playing the violin.
