Haowen Liu

Clayton High School

Haowen Liu is a Junior at Clayton High School. This is his second season with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. He first began playing the violin at the age of 11, learning from Alexey Shabalin, and currently studies with Angie Smart after moving to St. Louis.

In past years, Liu has played in ensembles at the Community Music School of Webster University, in both the YPSO and Preparatory Program. He has also participated in the 2024 and 2025 Missouri All-State Orchestra. Liu is currently in his school’s Symphonic Orchestra and a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society. In past summers, he participated in the Arianna Chamber Music Festival and Credo String Intensive in Chicago.

Besides the violin, Liu also enjoys activities such as running, tennis, and painting. He loves traveling and going to National Parks around the country.

Liu would like to thank all his teachers, Angie Smart, Hannah Ji, and Daniel Henderson for guiding his musical journey. He is extremely grateful for the unwavering support from his grandparents and parents throughout his years of playing the violin.
