Ian Kim
Ian Kim is a rising Sophomore at Edwardsville High School in Illinois and this will be his second year as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra’s viola section. He currently studies with Chris Tantillo of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Before making a permanent switch to the viola at the age of 7, Kim began his musical studies on the violin. In addition, he also enjoys studying the piano at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Keyboard Program. Kim has received top marks since 6th grade at the IGSMA Solo and Ensemble Competitions, participated in the past 3 annual ILMEA Festivals in the junior orchestra, participated in last fall’s ILMEA District Festival in the senior orchestra as principal chair, and has participated in the ILMEA All-State Honors Orchestra.
In school, Kim is a part of the Edwardsville High School Drama Club, including taking one of the violin roles in the pit orchestra for their spring production of Chicago: Teen Edition.
Kim would like to extend great thanks to his current viola teacher, Chris Tantillo and piano teacher Huei Li Chin for their guidance and support in his musical career so far. Kim would also like to express his gratitude to his former viola teacher Beth Guterman-Chu and high school orchestra director Victoria Voumard. Kim is also very grateful for the continuous support of his parents and older sister.
