Youth Orchestra
Ian Kim
Ian Kim is a rising Freshman at Edwardsville High School in Illinois and this will be his first year as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra’s viola section. He currently studies with Beth Guterman-Chu of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Before making a permanent switch to the viola at the age of 7, Ian began his musical studies on the violin. In addition, he also enjoys studying the piano at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Keyboard Program. Ian has received top marks since 6th grade at the IGSMA Solo and Ensemble Competitions and participated in the past 3 annual ILMEA Junior Orchestra Festivals. This past year, he has also had the experience of performing as a member of the Alton Symphony Orchestra.
At school, Ian actively participated in the Middle School’s Scholar Bowl program, where his team traveled often for district and regional-wide competitions. He also recently held a major acting role in his school’s production of ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ as Harry MacAfee.
Ian would like to extend great thanks to his current viola teacher, Beth Guterman-Chu and piano teacher Huei Li Chin for their guidance and support in his musical career so far. He would also like to thank former teachers, Erika Lord-Castillo and Vicki Lottes. Ian is also very grateful for the support of his parents and older sister.
